Michelin Guide honors Capella Hanoi icon of ‘maximalist’ architecture in Asia

03/03/2026
Michelin Guide has named Capella Hanoi among Asia’s most striking examples of maximalist architecture, where “more is more,” and design is not merely for staying, but for stepping into and fully inhabiting another world.

At a time when “quiet luxury” and minimalism have dominated with their ethos of restraint, Michelin Guide turns to celebrate the opposite extreme: maximalism — a vibrant interplay of color, texture, and seemingly contrasting details that come together in captivating harmony. Among bold hospitality concepts across Asia, Capella Hanoi stands out as a true “stage,” having been awarded Three Michelin Keys, the highest distinction in the Michelin Guide’s hotel selection.

Conceived by “design wizard” Bill Bensley and developed by Sun Group, the 47 room property unfolds as a symphony of 1920s Art Deco architecture, operatic drama and classical elegance. Inspired by the golden age of opera, each space recreates the opulence once associated with aristocrats and celebrated artists, transforming every stay into an immersive experience in which each room is named after a performer, composer or iconic production, and every guest becomes the protagonist of their own story.

The spirit of maximalism reaches its crescendo through more than 1,000 original artifacts – from performance costumes and archival photographs to vintage playbills – meticulously curated and seamlessly woven throughout the space. Marble flooring, hand-painted ceilings, intricately lacquered cabinets, antique gramophones, and Art Deco mirrors create the sensation of stepping into a living museum of memory and artistry. According to the Michelin Guide, every corner feels like a stage, from the grand staircase to the lush inner courtyard, forming a visual aria that celebrates Vietnam’s cultural heritage.

The philosophy of Bill Bensley is also the defining statement of Capella Hanoi: design is not meant to please everyone. “If you try to satisfy everyone, you will only create a basic box,” he once remarked. Rather than anonymous neutral spaces, he chooses to craft a universe rich in character, where emotion, memory and indulgence intersect without limits.

This theatrical narrative extends into the hotel’s dining venues, most notably Backstage, a space inspired by the backstage of an opera house with crimson velvet curtains, prop trunks and radiant lighting. Here, the open kitchen becomes the center of performance, transforming Hanoi’s culinary icons such as Pho and Bun cha into refined fine dining expressions, a culinary aria that awakens the inner star in every guest.

Recognition from the Michelin Guide not only affirms the standing of Capella Hanoi, but also reflects a broader shift among high end travelers toward destinations defined by strong identity and cultural depth. Moving beyond the notion of accommodation, Capella Hanoi emerges as a statement of a new standard in luxury hospitality, where art is not peripheral but intricately woven into every detail and every moment of the experience.
